Bringing home a puppy is an exciting time for everyone involved but it can also be a very overwhelming process. Keep these tips in mind for helping the transition from new puppy to family member in mind:

* Keep your puppy's vaccinations up-to-date. Help your puppy fight viruses like Canine Parvovirus through protecting their immune system with an age appropriate vaccination schedule. Read more here: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/canine-parvovirus

* Kennel training to establish routine and a "safe space". Kennel training is a way to give puppy a break when needed from overstimulation, to set boundaries with household guests and prevent unwanted jumping behaviors, and offer a safe place for the puppy to rest while the family is busy doing other activities. While kennel training, remember these tips:
  • Consistency is key.
  • Potty breaks before and after kenneling help establish routine.
  • If using toys in the kennel, check them frequently for any wear or tear and if they need to be replaced.
  • The kennel should always be a time of rest or break time. Never use it as a punishment.

* Provide chewing opportunities with appropriate toys. Puppy's play and explore through their mouths and will often chew on "things" when tired. Offer various toys that encourage chewing and are appropriate for their size. Avoid smaller toys that can get lodged in the throat or that can be ingested if ripped apart.

* Socialize to various types of people, sounds and objects. The socialization period starts at an early age of 3 weeks old and last up until the pup is around 14 weeks of age.  During this time, interactions with objects, people and sounds help develop social skills. It is important that the socializing be done in a positive manner. Stores like Home Depot or Tractor Supply often allow dogs (current on vaccinations) on leashes to visit the store. https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/socialization-dogs-and-cats

* Puppy proof your home. Don't leave cords where they can be pulled or chewed. Remove tempting items off end tables that can end up in the pup's mouth. Consider the use of baby gates to block off areas that are off limits for the pup. Avoid leaving chip bags on counters as these can be suffocation hazards should puppy get a hold of them.
