Microchipping Services

pup

Microchipping is one of the best ways to assist in the identification process of lost pets for veterinary or animal law enforcement agencies. Many pets go missing, especially around holidays that include the use of loud celebratory sounds; such as fireworks or music. According to the PetAmberAlert, "animal control officers see a 30-60% increase in missing pets between July 4-6". Visit the link for more information: https://www.petamberalert.com/

By microchipping pets, the chances of proper identification and owner reunification increases. Websites such as "PetKey" offer a national database for good samaritans to look up microchip information. Visit the link for more information: https://petkey.org/

Tips for microchipping:

* Go to the microchip website and register your pet.
* Provide an additional point of contact in the event you can not be reached.
* Consider adding microchipping services to spay or neutering services done at your veterinarian's clinic.

Tips for finding a lost pet:

* Contact your local animal control center to see if they can scan the pet for a microchip and contact the owner.
* Don't chase or corner fearful lost pets as this can startle them and often trigger a "fight or flight response".
* If the animal is wearing a rabies tag, the issuing veterinary clinic may be able to offer pet contact information.

Tips if you lost a pet:

* Contact your veterinary clinic and inform them your pet is missing should someone locate a lost animal with a rabies tag issued by that clinic.
* Ensure your pet is up-to-date on all vaccinations and your contact information is updated with both your veterinary clinic and microchip database. Contact your pet's microchip company and inform them of your missing animal so they will have an updated status on your pet.
*Consider leaving out clothing or blankets with familiar scents on porches or decks to help attract them back home.
* For missing cats, consider leaving their litter box out on a deck or porch to help attract them back home.
* Stock your vehicle with various treats and foods of high value and slip lead leashes for dogs. For cats, treats, canned foods and towels can be beneficial to keep on hand, as well as kitty carriers.
