Cat Trivia and Tidbits

cat

Need some fun trivia or tidbits for your next dinner party regarding cats? Thanks to "How to Speak Cat" cards, we got you covered!

  • Listen to this! Did you know that cats have incredible hearing? Humans have reported being alerted of floods and earthquakes thanks to their cat's behavior.
  • How many times a day does a cat meow? Some cats will meow on average 6 times a day! Although some owners report their cats meowing as little as once to twice a week.
  • Does your cat scratch on furniture? Cats will scratch to relieve stress, sharpen claws, stretch and exercise muscles. If your cat won't stop scratching things it shouldn't be, make sure you are providing plenty of scratching opportunities such as vertical and horizontal scratching surfaces.
  • Did you know that a cat's scent is as individual as a human's fingerprint? Brushing up against humans and objects marks them with the cat's unique scent not only marks the territory of the cat but can also serve as a "safety" boundary that the cat is making.
  • Cats often chatter when frustrated. These movements will often look like a cat opening their mouth and chattering its teeth but not releasing any vocalizing sounds. This is often done when the cat sees prey and wants to partake in hunting behavior.
  • Practice makes perfect: A cat will often practice catching mice but not want to actually eat it. It's all about the journey and not the destination, right?
  • Tail the truth: The twitching of a cat's tail can often indicate how a cat is feeling, and often that is frustration or curiosity. If your cat is doing this while they are by you, consider if you are possibly annoying your cat by your actions, food you may be consuming or the tv show you are watching.
  • Threat engaged: If you stare too intently at your cat, they may determine your "affection" as a threat.
  • To give or not to give, that is the question: Cats often will leave edible objects or prey with their humans and often it is perceived as a "gift" to the human. However, many cats are planning ahead and asking the human to save the meal for them to eat at another time.
