Thanksgiving Tips for Pet Owners
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on one's blessings while sharing food and company with loved ones. Help keep it a safe time for your dog and cat by considering these tips:
- Keep all food away from edges of counters and tables out of the pet's reach.
- Baby gates provide helpful boundaries for guests who may need space away from jumping pets. Gates also provide protection from babies and toddlers who may not understand safe and gentle touches for dogs or cats.
- Kennel training can be helpful during this time of year, allowing the dog to have a safe place out of the hectic kitchen or gathering place.
- All meat bones and discard piles should be taken outside and placed in a trash receptacle where animals cannot reach.
- Table scraps can increase risks of gastro-intestinal upset.
- If your pets get stressed out with company, talk to your veterinarian about behavior medication options.
- Encourage guests to keep luggage closed and out of pet reach. This will help avoid accidental ingestion of socks, medications, etc. that can result in a foreign body or toxicity exposure.
- If traveling with your pet, talk to your veterinarian about appropriate vaccinations based on risk exposures in the area you will be traveling.
- Do not leave foods on the stove top unattended, as they pose a burn and fire risk for cats that like to climb kitchen counters.
- If you are having guests stay in your home, make sure your cat has access to their usual scratching places to avoid unwanted scratching behaviors.
Many owners choose to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing special Thanksgiving meals or toppers for their dogs. If you make a special meal for your pup, consider following the foods:
- Carrots
- Celery
- Turkey (remove the skin and bones)
- Corn (no cob)
- Sweet potatoes (no additives)
- Green beans (no casserole, no additives)
- Apples (no core)
- Pumpkin (not pie filling)
AVOID the following foods:
- Onion
- Leeks
- Ham
- Turkey bones or chicken bones
- Casseroles
- Garlic
- Grapes
- Stuffing
Remember, even dog safe foods must be kept in moderation to avoid gastric upset. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your veterinarian during clinic hours.
